Chapter 7

Sammy worked tirelessly, not even sure at what point in time she’d started or even how long she’d been at it. When a warm hand landed on her shoulder, she jolted and looked up to see Radar standing there, a dimpled smile on his face.

He motioned over at Johnny, who was getting up. “Time for a food break, you two.”

She stared at him for a moment, blinking owlishly, and then slowly nodded. “That’s probably a good thing,” she murmured.

“Yes, it is,” Radar agreed. “Come on. It’s in the kitchen.”

She got up, stretched, and slowly walked to the kitchen, then looked over at Johnny. “I don’t know about you, but it does feel as if we’re getting somewhere.”

“We’re getting somewhere but just not fast enough,” Johnny complained, giving her a tired smile. “Like you, I just want this over with.”

“Yeah, but it’s not that easy though, is it?” she murmured. “We do what we can, but there’s no guarantee that any of this will be over with quickly.” As they walked into the kitchen, she stopped and stared. “Good God, did somebody cook real food?”

“I did,” Radar stated, looking over at her with a smile. “We didn’t want to take the chance of ordering food in, of anybody seeing activity around the house.”

She nodded in agreement. “No, I hear you,” she replied. “We do have another location we’re tracking down, and, on a whim, I’ve got several searches going. Hopefully something will pop while we eat.”

At that, Jonas came in and asked, “What do you mean by several searches?”

“The bomb maker’s a creature of habit,” she murmured. “He’s always using the same numbers, over and over again.”

“Isn’t that dangerous on his part?”

“It’s very dangerous, and it’s also something that most people would say is stupid, but, since the number always correlates to his daughter, who died, I guess it’s the driving force behind him. He’s doing what he’s doing for her. So it might be something he’s not even capable of changing. And, if that is the case, we also have to consider the fact that maybe Frenchie is planning an end game. Maybe he’s tired of all this, or maybe whatever payback he’s hoping for is this last job.”

“Regardless,” Jonas added, “we need to find him before he can do this again.”

“Oh, I agree. You won’t get any argument out of me on that.” Sammy yawned. She sat down at the table and watched in amazement, as a large pot of spaghetti noodles landed at the center of the table, followed by a huge pot of sauce. “I am impressed that you can cook, and I, for one, am grateful that you did.”

Johnny didn’t even wait for anybody to say anything, serving himself. Then he looked over at her. She nodded and lifted her plate, and Johnny quickly filled it with spaghetti. Without any comment, he tucked into the food, eating as if he hadn’t in weeks.

She stared at the food. It had been way too long since she’d had a healthy home-cooked meal.
